Fall on the Eastern Shore ends the same way every year. The leaves come down, the storm-damaged limbs from summer are still stacked by the shed, and the garage has quietly filled up with things nobody wants to haul into winter. A yard waste dumpster rental lets you deal with all of it in one weekend instead of a dozen trips.
Here’s what most people want to know first.
Quick Answers
What can go in a yard waste dumpster? Leaves, grass clippings, branches, brush, shrub trimmings and garden debris. Stumps, root balls and soil are a separate conversation, so ask before you load them (more on that below).
What size do I need? A 15-yard dumpster handles most fall yard cleanups on a typical lot. A 20-yard dumpster is the better fit if you’re also doing a garage cleanout, clearing an overgrown lot, or cutting back years of brush.
How much does it cost? At Home Wreckers, a 15-yard dumpster is $450 for 7 days with 1.5 tons included, and a 20-yard is $550 for 7 days with 2 tons included. Delivery and pickup are included, and extra days are $25 each. See the full breakdown on our pricing page.
When should I book? Book ahead, so you get the delivery date that fits your weekend. When you book online, choose “Yard Waste” as your debris type so your load is planned for the right disposal.
Do You Need a Dumpster, or Will Curbside Pickup Do?
Not every fall cleanup needs a dumpster, and it’s worth checking before you rent one.
If you live inside Salisbury city limits, the city offers free yard waste collection on Mondays. There are limits, though:
-
Up to 25 bags per household, each no heavier than 40 pounds
-
Up to 3 bundles of branches, each under 4 feet long, under 4 inches in diameter and under 40 pounds
For routine leaf raking on a small lot, that may be all you need.
A dumpster starts to make sense when your cleanup goes past those limits:
-
Large leaf volumes. A wooded lot in Parsonsburg or Ocean Pines can easily produce more than 25 bags in a single weekend.
-
Branches thicker than 4 inches. Fallen limbs and storm damage usually don’t meet bundling rules.
-
Overgrown areas. Clearing a fence line, a back corner or an old garden bed fills bundles faster than you’d expect.
-
More than one project. If you’re tackling the yard and the garage in the same weekend, one dumpster handles both.
-
Living outside a pickup area. Many homes in the county don’t have curbside yard waste collection at all.
The real cost of skipping a dumpster is time. Bagging, bundling and waiting week after week to get rid of one fall’s worth of debris can drag the job into December.
What Can Go in a Yard Waste Dumpster
Generally accepted:
-
Leaves and pine needles
-
Grass clippings
-
Branches and limbs
-
Brush and shrub trimmings
-
Garden debris, such as spent plants and vines
-
Small trees that have been cut down
Ask before you load:
-
Tree stumps and root balls. Wicomico County’s yard waste definition, updated in 2025, covers leaves, grass clippings, garden debris and brush, but specifically leaves out tree stumps, roots and shrubs with intact root balls. In Delaware, only some yard waste facilities accept stumps. Stumps are also heavy, so they eat into your weight allowance quickly.
-
Soil, sod and rocks. These are very heavy for their size and are often handled differently from yard waste. Tell us before you add them.
-
Yard waste mixed with household junk. If you’re combining yard debris with a garage cleanout, mention it when you book so we can plan the disposal correctly.

Never accepted in any dumpster:
-
Bagged lawn chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers
-
Gas cans, oil and fuel from mowers and blowers
-
Tires, batteries and paint
If you’re not sure about something, ask before it goes in the container. A two-minute call is easier than pulling items back out.
Delaware’s Yard Waste Ban: What It Means for Your Rental
If you’re cleaning up a property in Selbyville, Millsboro, Dagsboro, Bethany Beach or anywhere else in Sussex County, one rule matters more than most people realize: yard waste is banned from all Delaware landfills, according to Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).
Leaves, grass and branches can’t simply be thrown in with regular trash. They have to go to a facility that accepts yard waste, such as a composting or mulching site.
Here’s what that means for you:
-
Keep yard waste separate. A dumpster full of leaves and branches is easy to handle. The same leaves mixed in with old furniture and broken shelving are not.
-
Choose “Yard Waste” when you book. This tells us how the load needs to be handled before the dumpster ever reaches your driveway.
-
Small loads have other options. If you only have a pickup truck’s worth, DNREC keeps a list of yard waste drop-off sites across Sussex County, including several Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) stations. Most of those sites take loose material only, so expect to empty your bags on arrival.
For a full fall cleanup, a dumpster saves you the sorting, the bag-emptying and the trips.

Choose the 15-yard if your fall cleanup is mostly leaves, shrub trimmings and a few fallen branches. It’s also a good size for a garage cleanout on its own.
Choose the 20-yard if you’re combining jobs. A garage cleanout dumpster that also has to take the brush pile and the leaves fills up faster than people expect. The same goes for clearing a lot that hasn’t been touched in a few seasons.

Both sizes are walk-in dumpsters. Open the rear door and you can drag in brush, wheel in a loaded wheelbarrow, or walk in old garage shelving instead of lifting everything over the side. When you’re moving a whole yard’s worth of debris, that makes a real difference to your back.
If you’re between sizes, go larger. The $100 difference is far less than the cost of a second haul. For more help comparing the two, see our guide to choosing between a 15-yard and 20-yard dumpster.
Weight: Why Wet Leaves and Soil Add Up
Most people pick a dumpster size by volume. With yard waste, weight is what catches people out.
-
Dry leaves are light and bulky. You’ll usually run out of space long before you hit the weight limit.
-
Wet leaves are a different story. After a few days of fall rain, a pile of matted leaves weighs far more than it looks. Load leaves dry where you can, and keep a tarp handy to cover the load if rain is on the way.
-
Branches and brush are mostly air. Cut long limbs down and lay them flat so they pack tighter, and you’ll fit far more in the container.
-
Soil and sod are the heaviest yard materials. A single cubic yard of topsoil can weigh around a ton, so only a few yards of soil can use up most of your included weight.
Your rental includes 1.5 tons with a 15-yard or 2 tons with a 20-yard. Weight over that is billed per ton, so if your project includes soil, sod or stumps, tell us when you book and we’ll help you plan around it. The cost of dumpster rental in Salisbury guide explains how weight, size and rental length affect your final price.
Timing Your Fall Cleanup
On the Lower Shore, most of the leaf drop comes later than people expect. In early November 2025, Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources reported that Eastern Shore foliage was still at its peak, with leaves only starting to drop in Worcester County. In practice, that means the heaviest raking usually happens in November.
A few timing tips that help:
-
Plan one big cleanup instead of several small ones. Waiting until most of the leaves are down means you only rake, load and haul once.
-
Use the 7-day rental window. Have the dumpster delivered before your work weekend, and you get a full week to finish the yard, the garage and the shed at your own pace.
-
Pair it with the garage. Fall is when the patio furniture, pool gear and summer equipment get put away. It’s the natural time to clear out what you won’t use next year, while the dumpster is already in the driveway.
-
Clean up before winter weather. Wet, matted leaves left on the lawn through winter can smother the grass underneath. Clearing debris before the cold sets in also leaves your yard ready for spring.
-
Book ahead. Choosing your delivery date in advance means the dumpster arrives when your helpers are free, not after.
Fall Cleanup From One Local Team
Home Wreckers Demolition and Dumpsters is locally owned and based in Parsonsburg, MD. We deliver dumpsters across Wicomico and Worcester counties, including Salisbury, Ocean Pines and Berlin, and into coastal Delaware communities such as Selbyville and Millsboro.
Because we work on both sides of the state line, we plan every rental around the rules where you live, including Delaware’s yard waste ban.
If your fall project is bigger than raking, say an overgrown back lot, a field gone to brush or a property you’re getting ready to sell, our bush hogging services can cut it back, and a dumpster on site handles the debris.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put leaves in a dumpster? Yes. Leaves are one of the most common things in a fall yard waste dumpster. Choose “Yard Waste” when you book, and keep leaves separate from household junk where you can, especially in Delaware, where yard waste is banned from landfills.
Can I put tree stumps in a yard waste dumpster? Ask first. Stumps and root balls are often excluded from standard yard waste definitions, including Wicomico County’s, and they’re heavy enough to push you over your weight allowance quickly.
Can I mix yard waste with a garage cleanout? Tell us when you book. Many people do both jobs in one weekend, and letting us know what’s going in the container helps us plan the right disposal.
How long can I keep the dumpster? Every rental includes 7 days. If your cleanup runs longer, extra days are $25 each.
Will the dumpster damage my lawn? Driveways are the best place for a dumpster. Fall ground is often soft after rain, and a loaded container on wet grass can leave marks. If the dumpster has to go somewhere other than your driveway, talk to us when you book.
